The Indian delegation from FICCI was accorded a warm welcome in Penang, Malaysia, at a networking dinner hosted by the region’s business chambers at the Indian Palace Restaurant. This event symbolized the growing momentum in India-Malaysia economic relations, as well as the historic and cultural linkages between Penang—a trading hub with deep Indian roots—and India. For centuries, Penang has thrived as a melting pot that connects South and Southeast Asia, with a vibrant Indian community contributing to its social and economic landscape. Today, this shared history forms the foundation for dynamic commercial partnerships in technology, manufacturing, food processing, and services.

Dato’Seri N.Gobalakrishnan, Chairman of the ASEAN INDIA Business Council (AIBC), welcomed the Indian delegation, which included business leaders under the leadership of Mr. Sulabh Mathur from FICCI’s ASEAN division.
The President of the Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Dato Sri Choot, Vice President Dato Loh Eng Wee, and Mr. David Chen Wool Teong met with the delegation to express solidarity and discuss avenues for regional collaboration.
Mr. Shreekanth Sibastin, President of the India Kedah Chamber of Commerce, and his team further emphasized Kedah’s connection and proximity to Thailand—underscoring the cross-border opportunities available for Indian and Malaysian entrepreneurs.
Speaking on the occasion, Dato’Seri N.Gobalakrishnan remarked,
“India and Malaysia—particularly Penang—have a relationship built on trust, trade, and community spirit. This visit by the FICCI delegation shows our joint commitment to taking the partnership into new spheres, whether it’s business collaboration, technology transfer, or mutual prosperity. “

The FICCI business mission is set against the backdrop of deepening ASEAN-India economic relations, with Penang serving as a precursor to high-level ASEAN meeting in Kuala Lumpur.
Dr. Asif Iqbal, President of the Indian Economic Trade Organization (IETO), in his discussions, highlighted collaborative opportunities for Penang businesses with Indian partners and various chambers for collaborations, whose members are expected to participate in the United Economic Summit this year,
He remarked,
“Penang’s long-standing partnership with India has paved the way for shared growth, blending cultural heritage and innovation. Our mission here is to bring together Indian and Malaysian enterprises, leveraging our strengths and creating new pathways for sustainable development across the region.”

The evening was not only a celebration of friendship and collaboration, but also set the stage for continued India-Malaysia synergies at the United Economic Summit scheduled to take place in Klang on 23 November 2025. As the Indian delegation progresses through its engagements, optimism remains high for a future where Penang and India expand on a shared legacy, jointly driving regional growth and opportunity within ASEAN and beyond.
