The India Africa Trade Council (IATC) and the India Commonwealth Trade Council (ICTC) convened an important session in New Delhi to explore emerging opportunities between India and Sierra Leone. This engagement marked a significant step in building a stronger economic corridor between the two nations and strengthening India’s role as a trusted partner in Africa’s growth story.
The session was attended by His Excellency Rashid Sesay, High Commissioner of Sierra Leone to India, whose consistent efforts have been instrumental in advancing this partnership. In his address, HE Rashid Sesay reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s readiness to work with Indian enterprises and stressed the government’s commitment to providing a favorable climate for trade and investment. Representing the Office of the President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Sandy brought forward the country’s strategic priorities and emphasized the importance of long-term collaboration with Indian businesses.
Trade relations between India and Sierra Leone have grown steadily over the past decade. In 2020–21, bilateral trade stood at approximately US$160 million, and by 2024–25, it had risen to over US$408 million, making India one of Sierra Leone’s key trading partners. India remains a primary source for pharmaceuticals, machinery, engineering goods, and IT solutions, while Sierra Leone continues to present significant opportunities in minerals, agriculture, energy, and infrastructure. Beyond trade, India has extended over US$250 million in development assistance, supporting projects in power generation, water supply, agriculture, and telecommunications—reinforcing its role as a long-standing development partner.

The discussions highlighted priority areas for collaboration. Pharmaceuticals and healthcare remain critical sectors where India can contribute to Sierra Leone’s health infrastructure. Information technology and digital services offer scope for innovation and connectivity. Agro-industry and food processing are areas where value addition can transform agricultural output, while mining, energy, and infrastructure present opportunities for sustainable economic expansion.
The event brought together business leaders from multiple sectors across India who are actively seeking new markets and secure platforms for partnerships and joint ventures. Their participation underscored the growing confidence in Sierra Leone’s business environment and the trust placed in the India Africa Trade Council and India Commonwealth Trade Council to facilitate these connections.
As the session concluded, the message was clear: the partnership between India and Sierra Leone is moving beyond conversations. It is transitioning into practical cooperation, investments, and joint ventures that will create real economic value for both countries. Under the leadership of HE Rashid Sesay and with the institutional support of IATC and ICTC, this engagement is set to open new doors for trade and investment in the years ahead.
